TravelbyBit officially announce retail stores across Brisbane International Airport are now enabled with the innovative point of sale (POS) system to accept digital currencies from keen travellers, as of today.
Australian Way Proprietary Limited (awpl), Australia’s leading travel retailer, has announced that their retail stores Australian Way, Merino Collection, Dreamtime Journey, News Travels, and Carry On at Brisbane International Airport are now accepting six digital currencies including Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dash, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, and XEM.
Awpl Marketing Manager, Mihali Kouros, commented;
“We are delighted to be a part of the world’s first cryptocurrency-friendly airport. Customers visiting Brisbane Airport will have even more options now that TravelbyBit has been set up in our stores, as they are able to complete their purchases using any combination of cash, traditional credit cards, mobile payment platforms, and now cryptocurrencies,”
TravelbyBit CEO, Caleb Yeoh said digital currency payments have surged since the payment system was introduced in Brisbane in late 2017. Mr Yeoh says;
“Since inception, our innovative POS system is now in 150 stores across Australia. Thousands of digital currency transactions have been made, with a collective value over $96,000. In addition to purchasing food and drinks in transit, tourists can now buy gifts, gadgets and books with digital currency at Brisbane Airport.”
Brisbane Airport Corporation welcomes the activation of awpl’s retail stores now accepting digital currencies.
Clint Harvey, Business Performance and Development Manager Brisbane Airport Corporation, said, “Brisbane Airport is proud to be the first airport in the world to achieve this in partnership with a small local start-up business such as TravelbyBit.
Our retailers have been keen to be a part of this process, providing choice for travellers from around the globe who prefer to transact in digital currency. We will be watching this space closely and look to incorporate this functionality across other areas as the popularity of digital currencies increases,” he said.
There are now over 22 stores actively accepting digital currencies between Brisbane Airport’s Domestic & International terminals, with signage mounted on POS stations, attracting enquiries & sales.
Leading blockchain & digital currency influencer, Alex Saunders from Nuggets News fully supports the new stores coming online, saying it will be easier for travellers to use.
“Accepting digital currency payments removes the need for travel cards and associated fees when exchanging currencies. By owning a digital currency it is becoming easier to transact with suppliers and businesses within Australia,” he said.
“TravelbyBit are leading the way in inducting innovative digital currency merchants across the country, and the unveiling of the first ever digital currency friendly airport is an exciting step on the path to worldwide adoption,” said Mr Saunders.

TravelbyBit expect this adoption trend to rise with more travellers arriving in Brisbane daily from overseas.
TravelbyBit have partnered with the NEM Foundation to boost local tourism and bring international tourists to the Sunshine State. The purpose of the NEM Foundation is to introduce, educate, and promote the use of the NEM blockchain technology platform on an international scale to industries and institutions. NEM ranks as one of the top blockchain technologies worldwide.
“Innovation in blockchain technology is imperative to the success of future global companies. TravelbyBit is helping pave the way for advancement in the travel and retail sectors,” said Kristof Van de Reck, Interim President of the NEM Foundation.

Mr Yeoh said “By mid August, those travellers spending the digital currency on the NEM blockchain can receive a 10% discount on their purchase thanks to the partnership between TravelbyBit, The NEM Foundation & awpl.”
